Generic Verdeso

Exclusivity rights currently prevent a company from making generic Verdeso (desonide foam) products. However, these exclusivity rights are set to expire in September 2019, which would be the earliest date that a generic version of the drug could become available. However, lawsuits or new patents for specific uses may delay the manufacturing of generic versions of Verdeso.

Can I Buy Generic Verdeso?

Verdeso® (desonide foam) is a prescription skin medication used to treat atopic dermatitis. It is a topical steroid that is applied directly onto the affected areas of the skin twice a day. The drug comes in the form of a foam.
Verdeso is made by Stiefel Laboratories, Inc. The drug is protected against generic competition by exclusivity rights, and no generic versions are available in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The exclusivity rights for Verdeso are set to expire in September 2019. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for Verdeso uses.

Is Desonide a Generic Version of Verdeso?

No -- desonide is the active ingredient in Verdeso (as well as in DesOwen®, Desonate®, and generic versions of DesOwen), but it is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine.
In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
DesOwen comes as a cream, an ointment, and a lotion. Desonate comes as a gel. Neither are equivalent to Verdeso, which is a foam.
