Side Effects of Ustekinumab

In clinical studies, people taking ustekinumab reported side effects such as infections, chills, headaches, and back pain, among others. However, most people tolerate the drug well; if side effects do occur, they tend to be minor and easy to treat. In rare cases, serious problems (such as confusion or wheezing) may occur while taking ustekinumab; these symptoms require immediate medical attention.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Ustekinumab

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with ustekinumab (Stelara®). However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Ustekinumab Side Effects to Report

Some side effects of ustekinumab, although occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
  • Symptoms of an infection, such as a cough, chills, fever, or weakness
  • Cancer symptoms of any type
  • Symptoms of reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS), such as:
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, including:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
    • Unexplained swelling.
