Tazarotene Foam Dosage

The recommended dosage of tazarotene foam for acne treatment is the same for everyone. Apply this foam on the entire affected area of the skin once a day in the evening. If you develop severe skin irritation, your healthcare provider may recommend using this product less often, such as every other day. Do not apply large amounts, as it can increase your risk for side effects.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Tazarotene Foam

There is only one standard dose of tazarotene foam (Fabior®), regardless of your age, weight, or the severity of your acne. As is always the case, do not adjust your tazarotene dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Tazarotene Foam Dosing Guidelines for Acne

Tazarotene foam is applied to the affected areas of the skin once daily in the evening. Although some skin irritation, redness, and burning are to be expected as you start this medication, your healthcare provider may recommend that you use tazarotene foam less frequently (such as every other day) temporarily, if extreme irritation occurs.
Because tazarotene foam will make you more sensitive to the sun, your healthcare provider will probably recommend that you use a sunscreen every morning. He or she can recommend a sunscreen that will not irritate your skin or worsen your acne.
Because tazarotene foam can cause birth defects, women of childbearing potential should have a negative pregnancy test before starting this medicine and should start tazarotene foam during a normal menstrual period. Adequate birth control must be used throughout treatment (see Fabior and Pregnancy for more information).

General Information on Using Tazarotene Foam

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with tazarotene foam include the following:
  • Wash the affected area, usually the face and perhaps the upper chest, with a mild cleanser, dry thoroughly, and then apply the foam.
  • Shake the can well before each use.
  • Make sure to cover the entire affected area; "spot treatment" will not work nearly as well.
  • Do not apply too much -- using more is wasteful and increases the risk for side effects, without actually improving the effectiveness of the drug.
  • Make sure to keep tazarotene foam away from the eyes, mouth, and vagina.
  • Wash your hands after applying this product.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure on areas of the body where tazarotene foam has been applied, as you will burn more easily.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dose or tazarotene foam dosing in general, please talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
