How to Apply Protopic

When and How to Use It

Some general considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Protopic include the following:
  • This medication comes in the form of an ointment. It is applied to the affected area of the skin twice a day.
  • Gently rub a thin layer of ointment completely into your skin. Use only a small amount of medicine each time. Applying more will not make Protopic work better or faster and may increase your risk of side effects.
  • Wash your hands before applying the ointment. If you are not treating your hands, wash them again afterward to help avoid getting the medicine in your eyes or mouth or on nonaffected areas of skin.
  • Do not bathe, shower, or swim immediately after applying the ointment. Doing so could wash off the medicine. Also, do not cover the affected area of skin with bandages or other dressings.
  • Stop using Protopic when your symptoms clear, unless your healthcare provider tells you otherwise.
  • Avoid tanning beds and prolonged sun exposure while using the medicine. If you do go out in the sun, cover the affected area with loose-fitting clothing.
  • If you are using a moisturizer with this medicine, apply the moisturizer after applying Protopic. Your healthcare provider can help you choose the best moisturizer for your skin type.
  • Contact your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve within six weeks of starting Protopic. You may have a condition other than eczema.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed. Do not use this product for longer or more often than directed.

Dosing Information

The dose of Protopic your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on the severity of your symptoms. Only the lower strength is approved to treat children.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
