Hydrocortisone Butyrate Side Effects

Although many people do not experience any negative effects with hydrocortisone butyrate, side effects are possible with this skin medicine. Some of the most common problems include skin irritation, burning, and dryness. Other reactions to watch out for include infections, severe fluid retention, or hallucinations -- are potentially serious and may require medical care.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Hydrocortisone Butyrate

Just like any medicine, hydrocortisone butyrate (Locoid®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with hydrocortisone butyrate. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Hydrocortisone Butyrate Side Effects to Report

Some side effects of steroids, including hydrocortisone butyrate, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) or diabetes
  • Infections
  • Ruptured tendons
  • Psychotic reactions, such as hallucinations or extreme aggression
  • Glaucoma
  • Severe fluid retention
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
In general, these serious reactions are extremely unlikely to occur when hydrocortisone butyrate is used as directed for a short time. Applying too much, over too large an area, and for extended periods may increase the risk for serious steroidal side effects.
