Generic Halog

Although the patents for Halog (halcinonide) have expired, no generic versions of this drug are currently available. It is unknown when a generic Halog may become available. If there is insufficient interest in a generic version of this drug, it may not be profitable for a manufacturer to make a generic product.

Can I Buy Generic Halog?

Halog® (halcinonide) is a prescription skin medication used to treat a wide variety of skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema. It is a topical steroid that is applied to the skin two or three times a day. It comes in the form of an ointment and a cream.
Halog is made by Ranbaxy. Although the patents for this medication have expired, the drug is not available in generic form.

Why Isn't Generic Halog Available?

This is a difficult (if not impossible) question to answer. As previously stated, there are no unexpired patents or exclusivity rights for Halog. This means that a generic version could become available at any time, as soon as a manufacturer decides to make it and to apply to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to do so.
It is unclear why no manufacturers have chosen to make generic Halog. Perhaps there is not a large enough market for this particular steroid. There are a wide variety of different steroid products on the market today, and some have become more popular than others; Halog is among the less popular ones.

Is Halcinonide a Generic Version of Halog?

No -- halcinonide is the active ingredient in Halog, but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine.
In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
