What Is Fluocinolone Oil Used For?

Fluocinolone oil works to treat scalp psoriasis and atopic dermatitis by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune system. It is approved to treat scalp psoriasis in adults, and atopic dermatitis in adults and children as young as three months old. There may also be occasions where a healthcare provider might recommend using fluocinolone oil "off-label" to treat contact dermatitis, poison ivy, and other conditions.

An Overview of Uses for Fluocinolone Oil

Fluocinolone oil (Derma-Smoothe/FS®) is a prescription topical (applied to the skin) corticosteroid medication. It comes as a body oil and a scalp oil. Fluocinolone body oil is approved to treat atopic dermatitis in adults and moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in children. The scalp oil is approved to treat psoriasis of the scalp in adults only.

Fluocinolone Oil Use for Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic (long-lasting) skin disorder that is characterized by dry, itchy, and inflamed rashes. It is commonly referred to as eczema, although eczema is actually a general term for several types of inflammatory skin conditions. Atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema.
People with atopic dermatitis usually experience periods when their symptoms are worse, or "flares." These flares often result from a type of allergic response to certain triggers (things that make the condition worse). Many things can trigger atopic dermatitis flares, and specific triggers can vary from person to person. Common triggers often include irritants that contact the skin, such as:
  • Certain fabrics
  • Soaps
  • Perfumes
  • Allergens in the air, such as pollens or molds.
(Click What Makes Atopic Dermatitis Worse? for more information about possible triggers and Symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis for information on skin changes that may occur from this condition.)
Atopic dermatitis is more common in babies and children. However, it can affect people of all ages.
Fluocinolone oil can be used to treat atopic dermatitis in both adults and children who are at least three months of age. When used in children, it should only be used for up to four weeks at a time.
