Desonide Cream Side Effects

Some of the possible side effects of desonide cream may include skin irritation, such as burning, stinging, and dryness. These types of reactions are usually minor and easily treated. However, there are also some problems that are potentially serious and should be reported to a healthcare provider right away, including hallucinations, infections, or severe fluid retention.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Desonide Cream

Just like any medicine, desonide cream (DesOwen®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with desonide cream. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Desonide Cream Side Effects to Report

Some side effects of desonide cream are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) or diabetes
  • Infections
  • Ruptured tendons
  • Psychotic reactions, such as hallucinations or extreme aggression
  • Glaucoma
  • Severe fluid retention
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
In general, these serious reactions are unlikely to occur when desonide cream is used as directed for a short period of time. Applying too much of the medicine over too large of an area, for an extended period of time, may increase the risk for serious steroid side effects.
