Zyclara Side Effects

Clinical trials have shown that skin reactions, such as redness, scabbing, and dryness, are the most commonly reported side effects of Zyclara. In fact, most people who use this medicine will develop some type of skin reaction. In most cases, reactions such as these are minor. However, if you develop more serious problems like fever or difficulty breathing, contact your healthcare provider right away.

An Introduction to Zyclara Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Zyclara® (imiquimod cream) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Although almost all people using this medication will develop some sort of skin reaction to the product, most reactions such as these are minor.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Zyclara. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Zyclara

Zyclara has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people using the drug were documented and compared to those that occurred in another group of people using a cream that did not contain any active ingredients (a placebo). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.

In these studies, the most common Zyclara side effects were skin reactions, including but not limited to:

  • Redness -- in up to 96 percent of people
  • Scabbing or crusting -- up to 93 percent
  • Flaking, scaling, or dryness -- up to 91 percent
  • Swelling -- up to 75 percent
  • Erosion or ulceration (open sores) -- up to 62 percent
  • Oozing -- up to 51 percent.

Other common reactions, occurring in 1 percent to 6 percent of people, included but were not limited to:

  • Headache
  • Itching at the application site
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Cold sores (when used on the face)
  • Pain
  • Diarrhea.
