What Is Topical Fluticasone Propionate Used For?

Available as a cream, ointment, or lotion, topical fluticasone propionate may help relieve itching and inflammation caused by certain skin conditions. Specifically, the lotion is approved for treating atopic dermatitis in adults and children as young as three months old. The cream and ointment forms of topical fluticasone propionate are used for treating various skin conditions, including poison ivy, psoriasis, and eczema.

An Overview of Uses for Topical Fluticasone Propionate

Topical fluticasone propionate (Cutivate®) is a prescription skin medication. The lotion is approved to treat atopic dermatitis, while the ointment and cream forms are approved to treat inflammation and itching due to a wide variety of conditions, including:
 
 
Specifically, fluticasone propionate ointment and cream are approved to treat any skin condition that is responsive to corticosteroids.
 

How Does It Work?

Topical fluticasone propionate is part of a group of medications known as glucocorticoids, which are a type of corticosteroid (or "steroid" for short). Although glucocorticoids have numerous effects in the body, they are used mostly for their anti-inflammatory or immune-suppressing properties. Topical fluticasone propionate works by decreasing inflammation and suppressing an overactive immune system.
 

Can Children Use Topical Fluticasone Propionate?

Fluticasone propionate lotion and cream are approved for use in children as young as three months of age. The ointment is approved only for use in adults.
 
Topical fluticasone propionate is not approved to treat a diaper rash and should never be applied to the diaper area, as doing so can increase the risk for side effects. Children are at an increased risk for serious side effects of steroids. Topical fluticasone propionate has been studied only for short-term use in children. It is unknown if longer use is safe or effective.
