Tazarotene Foam Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Tazarotene foam has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects of tazarotene foam were carefully recorded and compared to reactions that occurred in a group of people given a foam that did not contain any active ingredients (a placebo). This allowed researchers to determine which problems were true side effects and which were simply coincidental.

In these studies, the most common tazarotene foam side effects occurred at the application site (where the medication was applied) and included:

  • Irritation -- in up to 14 percent of people
  • Dryness -- up to 7 percent
  • Redness -- up to 6 percent
  • Peeling and flaking -- up to 6 percent.

Other common side effects, occurring in at least 1 percent of people, included:

  • Sensitivity to the sun (burning more easily)
  • Pain
  • Itching
  • Dermatitis.

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.

Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while using tazarotene foam or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to the medication, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
