A bacterial infection, cellulitis is often characterized by symptoms affecting the skin, such as:
- Warmth
- Swelling
- Redness
- Pain.
Although doctors are aware of what causes cellulitis (group A streptococcus), they can seldom explain why one person will get the infection and another person will not. Research has shown that people with certain risk factors, such as problems with the lymphatic system, are more likely than others to develop the condition.
A variety of antibiotics can be used to treat cellulitis. Unfortunately, the infection will come back in up to 50 percent of people who receive treatment. People who experience a recurrence may be given antibiotics for a longer period.
