Hydrocortisone Butyrate Drug Information

Hydrocortisone butyrate (Locoid®) comes in several forms, including an ointment, cream, lotion, and liquid solution. As a steroid, it works to treat certain skin conditions by suppressing an overactive immune system and reducing inflammation. It is applied on the affected areas of the skin two or three times daily.

Although this steroid may help relieve symptoms of eczema, psoriasis, and various other skin conditions, not everyone can use this drug. Safety information on hydrocortisone butyrate should be discussed with your healthcare provider before starting treatment to help reduce your risk for any complications. For example, you may not be able to use it if you have certain allergies, if you are taking certain medications, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Although most people tolerate this skin medicine well, side effects are possible and can include dryness, burning, and itching. In most cases, reactions to the medication tend to be mild and easy to treat.
