Brimonidine Gel Information

When used for treating rosacea, brimonidine gel (Mirvaso®) works to improve skin redness by causing the blood vessels to constrict (narrow). This prescription medication is only approved for use in adults age 18 and older.

Brimonidine gel is applied in a pea-sized dot on your forehead, each cheek, nose, and chin, and then gently spread into a thin layer over the entire face. It is applied once daily, as the effects only last about 12 hours. Some people who use this medicine will experience side effects, such as a burning sensation, redness, and facial flushing.

Although this medication may help with rosacea, not everyone can use it. Information on brimonidine gel should be discussed with your healthcare provider before starting treatment to minimize your risk for certain complications. For instance, this medicine can make some conditions worse, such as depression, heart disease, and low blood pressure.
