Generic Rheumatrex

The patents for Rheumatrex have expired, and generic versions are now available. At this time, generic Rheumatrex is sold as 2.5-mg tablets and is produced or marketed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Teva Pharmaceuticals, and other companies. The FDA has given all generic versions an "AB" rating, which means they are considered equivalent to the brand-name version.

Can I Buy Generic Rheumatrex?

Rheumatrex® (methotrexate) is a prescription medication used to treat various conditions, such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis. It comes in tablet form and is taken by mouth, often just once a week.

Currently, brand-name Rheumatrex is made by EXCELLA GmbH for DAVA Pharmaceuticals, Inc. However, the patents for this drug have expired, and generic versions of Rheumatrex are available.

Who Makes Generic Rheumatrex?

Generic Rheumatrex is made or marketed by various companies, such as:

  • DAVA Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
  • Mylan Pharmaceuticals
  • Roxane Laboratories, Inc.
  • Teva Pharmaceuticals.

These generic versions come in one strength (methotrexate 2.5 mg tablets).

Is Generic Methotrexate as Good as Rheumatrex?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one.

An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication. All of the generic methotrexate 2.5 mg tablets currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Rheumatrex.

However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
