Generic Protopic

There is currently no generic version of Protopic (tacrolimus ointment) available. The first patent has already expired, so it is possible that brand-name Protopic is still protected by one or more other patents. The next patent is set to expire in September 2014. Tacrolimus is the active ingredient in Protopic, not a generic version of it.

Can I Buy Generic Protopic?

Protopic® (tacrolimus ointment) is a prescription medication approved to treat moderate-to-severe symptoms of atopic dermatitis. It is an ointment that is applied directly to the skin.

Protopic is made by Astellas Pharma Tech Co., Ltd. for Astellas Pharma US, Inc. It is currently protected by patents that prevent any generic Protopic from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will Generic Protopic Be Available?

The first Protopic patent expired in January 2012. However, the drug is not yet available in generic form. Most likely, this means that at least one other (later-expiring) patent is still protecting the medication from generic competition. The next Protopic patent is set to expire in September 2014. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.

However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Protopic uses. Once the patent expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic version of the drug.

Is Tacrolimus a Generic Protopic?

No -- tacrolimus is the active ingredient in Protopic ointment, not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of any drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
