At this time, Protopic® (tacrolimus ointment) is not available in generic form. This situation is not expected to change until January 2012, at the earliest, when the patent is due to expire. Tacrolimus is not generic for Protopic. This is the active ingredient of the drug, which is not the same thing as a generic version.
