Eczema and Protopic
Severe cases of atopic dermatitis, a type of eczema, may be treated successfully with Protopic® (tacrolimus ointment). This medicated ointment is applied twice daily to affected areas of the skin. Treatment is typically for a short period -- just until symptoms improve -- however, you can begin using it again after a break.
When using Protopic for eczema, apply just a thin layer. Applying more will not make the medication any more effective, and may actually increase your risk for side effects. In addition, do not shower, bathe, or swim right after applying it, as this can cause the ointment to wash off.
