Who Should Not Take Promethazine?

You should not take promethazine if you are:
 
  • Allergic to promethazine hydrochloride, Phenergan, or any of the inactive components. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients. Also, you should not take this medication if you have ever had an "idiosyncratic" reaction to promethazine or similar medications. Signs of such a reaction include hallucinations, agitation, or nightmares.
     
  • In a coma.
 
As mentioned, children under two years of age should not take this medication.
