Periorbital Cellulitis (Cont.)

Symptoms of Periorbital Cellulitis

Periorbital cellulitis symptoms occur at the location of the infected skin (local cellulitis symptoms) or on other parts of the body (systemic cellulitis symptoms).

Common local and systemic symptoms of periorbital cellulitis include:

  • Fever
  • Redness and swelling of the eyelid
  • Redness in the whites of the eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Eye swelling in front of the whites of the eyes (chemosis).

Diagnosing Periorbital Cellulitis

Your doctor can make a periorbital cellulitis diagnosis by asking a number of questions concerning your medical history, performing a physical exam, and ordering blood tests.

Periorbital Cellulitis: Treatment

The goal of treatment for periorbital cellulitis is to treat the affected area and to prevent periorbital cellulitis from becoming orbital cellulitis, which is a medical emergency.

Oral antibiotics are used to treat periorbital cellulitis in adults; IV antibiotics are used to treat the infection in young children. However, adults with severe symptoms may receive IV antibiotics as well. Be sure to tell your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin.
