What Is Metronidazole Topical Gel?

A healthcare provider may prescribe metronidazole gel (Metrogel®) for the topical treatment of rosacea. But what is metronidazole gel and how does it work?
 
This prescription medicine comes as a gel that is applied on the skin (topically) once or twice daily. Metronidazole gel is specifically approved to treat the bumps and pimples caused by rosacea, and may help treat the redness or dryness as well. It is only approved for use in adults age 18 and older.
 
Although it is not exactly clear how this drug works, the active ingredient is a type of antibiotic. There may also be some anti-inflammatory and immune-suppressing properties. Side effects may include dryness, stinging, and scaling of the skin.
