Metronidazole Topical Gel

Available by prescription only, metronidazole gel (Metrogel®) is a topical gel that is applied on the skin once or twice a day to treat rosacea. This medicated skin product has two available strengths: Metrogel 1% (sold as a brand-name product only) and metronidazole 0.75% gel (available as a generic product only).
Although most people tolerate this medicine well, side effects are possible and may include skin dryness, itching, and burning. Some people who have certain medical conditions or who are taking certain medications may not be able to use this product.
It is not exactly clear how metronidazole gel works, but the active ingredient is a type of antibiotic. The drug may also have some anti-inflammatory and immune-suppressing properties.
