Metronidazole Gel

Metronidazole gel is a drug used for treating rosacea. This prescription medicine is applied to the skin once or twice daily. It contains an antibiotic, and may also have some immune-suppressing and anti-inflammatory properties. Although most people do not have any problems while using this medicated skin gel, side effects are possible and may include stinging, scaling, and dryness of the skin.

What Is Metronidazole Gel?

Metronidazole gel (Metrogel®) is a prescription rosacea medication. It comes as a gel that is applied to the skin once or twice daily. This skin gel should not be confused with Metrogel-Vaginal®, a different product used to treat bacterial vaginosis.
 

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, metronidazole gel can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the skin gel will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well.
 
If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious reactions are less common.
 
Common side effects of metronidazole gel may include but are not limited to:
 
  • Dryness
  • Skin scaling
  • Itching
  • Stinging or burning.
