Can I Buy Generic Kenalog Ointment?
Kenalog
® ointment (
triamcinolone acetonide ointment) is a prescription skin ointment used to treat a wide variety of skin conditions, such as
psoriasis and eczema. It is a topical steroid (a steroid that is applied directly on the skin) that is applied two to four times a day.
Brand-name
Kenalog ointment was made by Apothecon but is no longer available. Generic versions are available and are made by several different manufacturers.
Generic Kenalog ointment is available in the following strengths:
- Triamcinolone acetonide 0.025% ointment
- Triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% ointment
- Triamcinolone acetonide 0.5% ointment.
These generics are made by various manufacturers, including Perrigo and Fougera. Generic Kenalog ointment comes in a variety of different package sizes, from small tubes to rather large ones. If you are using the drug for a short period of time, you will probably need just a small tube. However, if you are treating an ongoing condition, a larger tube may be more economical.
What About Aristocort?
Aristocort® was another brand-name triamcinolone acetonide product. Like Kenalog ointment, Aristocort is no longer available. Some of the generic versions of triamcinolone ointment might be equivalent to Aristocort, not Kenalog, at least in a strictly technical sense. This is difficult to determine, however, as both Aristocort and Kenalog are no longer available.
For practical purposes, most pharmacists would consider any FDA-approved triamcinolone ointment to be equivalent to Kenalog ointment.
