Kalbitor Warnings and Precautions

For some people, Kalbitor may cause serious complications, including dangerous allergic reactions. Other precautions for using Kalbitor safely include warnings of possible dangers for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Also, people who have certain allergies may not be able to safely use this medication.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to receiving Kalbitor® (ecallantide) if you have:
 
  • Ever had an allergic reaction to Kalbitor
  • Any allergies, including to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
 
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
 
  • Breastfeeding
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant.
 
You should also tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
 

Specific Precautions and Warnings for Kalbitor

Some warnings and precautions to be aware of prior to using this medication include the following:
 
  • It is possible to have a serious allergic reaction to Kalbitor; therefore, Kalbitor is administered by a healthcare provider who can appropriately treat an allergic reaction.
 
  • There are no known drug interactions between Kalbitor and other medications; however, no formal studies have been done to see if there are drug interactions between Kalbitor and other medications (see Kalbitor Drug Interactions).
 
  • It is unknown if Kalbitor passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, discuss this with your healthcare provider prior to using the drug (see Kalbitor and Breastfeeding).
 
  • Kalbitor is a pregnancy Category C medication. This means it may not be safe to use during pregnancy (see Kalbitor and Pregnancy).
