Generic Istodax

Although the first patent for Istodax (romidepsin) has expired, there are still no generic versions of the drug available. This is likely because Istodax is being protected by patents or exclusivity rights that haven't expired yet. Keep in mind that romidepsin is referred to as the "generic name" of Istodax, but it is not actually a "generic version" of the medication.

Can I Buy Generic Istodax?

Istodax® (romidepsin) is a prescription medication used in the treatment of a type of immune system cancer known as T-cell lymphoma. It is given as a slow injection into a vein (an intravenous, or IV, infusion).
Istodax is made by Ben Venue Laboratories, Inc., for Celgene Corporation. It is currently under the protection of patents and exclusivity rights that prevent any generic Istodax from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The first patent for Istodax expired in August 2013. Yet, no generic versions are available. This strongly suggests that other patents or exclusivity rights are protecting the drug from generic competition. There are several more patents and exclusivity rights yet to expire for Istodax, the next of which expires in November 2014. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.
However, other circumstances could come up to delay or shorten the exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or patents for new Istodax uses. Once the patent expires, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Istodax drug.

Is Romidepsin a Generic Istodax?

No -- romidepsin is the active ingredient in Istodax, but it is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
