What You Need to Know About Injectable Poly-L Lactic Acid

How Does It Work?

Injectable poly-L lactic acid works differently than more traditional fillers. Instead of just "filling in" the lines or sunken areas, injectable poly-L lactic acid actually stimulates the body to make new collagen. This product contains tiny poly-L lactic acid (PLLA) beads. Over time, the PLLA beads break down and stimulate the body to make new collagen, which also improves the look of wrinkles and lines.

Although an immediate "filling" result is seen, this diminishes over the first 24 hours as the liquid portion of the injection is absorbed into the body. The more long-lasting results are seen much more gradually (over weeks or months).

Clinical Effects of Injectable Poly-L Lactic Acid

In studies, injectable poly-L lactic acid has been shown to be effective for up to 25 months. The full effects are not seen immediately; instead the improvements are seen gradually over time.

How Is This Product Injected?

Some general considerations for those using this product include the following:

  • Several treatment sessions are usually necessary (typically three, although some people with severe facial fat loss due to HIV may need more treatments). You must wait at least two or three weeks between treatment sessions.

  • You will need to remove any makeup before being treated.

  • Your healthcare provider may apply a numbing cream or inject an anesthetic before treatment, especially if you are particularly concerned about pain.

  • Within the first 24 hours after treatment, it can be helpful to ice the treated area (although make sure to avoid putting ice directly on the skin). Also, it is important to massage the treated area for five minutes, five times a day, for five days after treatment.

  • The entire procedure is brief and is done in your healthcare provider's office.

  • You can resume most of your usual activities and may apply cosmetics immediately after the procedure, as long as no complications occurred.
