Imiquimod Treatment

A healthcare provider may prescribe imiquimod (Aldara®, Zyclara®) for the treatment of certain skin conditions. Specifically, Aldara and its generic versions are approved to treat the following conditions:

  • Actinic keratosis (AK), also known as solar keratosis, of the face or scalp in adults with normal immune systems
  • Superficial basal cell carcinoma in adults with normal immune systems
  • External genital warts and perianal warts in people 12 years old and older.

Although Aldara is approved for all three uses, Zyclara is only approved for treating actinic keratosis and genital/perianal warts.

It is not entirely clear how imiquimod works, but it is thought that the beneficial effects of the drug might be due to how it affects the immune system.
