What Is the Standard Imiquimod Amount for My Condition?

Imiquimod Dosing Guidelines for Genital or Perianal Warts

For Aldara (and generic versions of Aldara):

  • The standard dose of Aldara (imiquimod 5%) for treating external genital warts or external perianal warts is a thin layer applied before bedtime three times a week until the warts are gone (up to a maximum of 16 weeks). Women should be careful to not get any of the medication inside the vagina, as vaginal tissue is too delicate for this medication. Apply it at bedtime, leave it on for 6 to 10 hours, and then wash it off in the morning.

  • Each packet is enough to cover about 20 square centimeters of skin. If you are treating a smaller area, you will use less than a full packet.

For Zyclara:

  • The standard dose of Zyclara for treating external genital warts or external perianal warts is a thin layer applied once daily before bedtime until the warts are gone (up to a maximum of eight weeks). Women should be careful to not get any of the medication inside the vagina, as vaginal tissue is too delicate for this medication.

  • Only the 3.75% strength of Zyclara is approved for this use. The 2.5% cream is not approved for this use.

Imiquimod Dosing Guidelines for Basal Cell Carcinoma

The standard recommended dosage of imiquimod for basal cell treatment is five applications per week (before bedtime) for six weeks. The maximum size of basal cell lesions treatable by this drug is 2 cm (a little less than an inch) across.

Make sure to treat the entire area, including 1 cm past the borders of the lesion. The exact amount applied will depend on the size of your lesion; your healthcare provider will advise you exactly how much to use. Apply it at bedtime, leave it on for about eight hours, and then wash it off.

Only imiquimod 5% cream (Aldara and generic versions of Aldara) is approved for this use. Zyclara is not approved for this use.
