How Often Should I Take Imiquimod?

Imiquimod (Aldara®, Zyclara®) is licensed for treating several skin conditions, including actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, and external genital or perianal warts. If your healthcare provider has prescribed imiquimod, you may be wondering, "How often should I take it?"

The specific dosing guidelines will depend on a number of factors, including the particular condition being treated, the product used, and whether you develop severe skin reactions. Depending on factors such as these, imiquimod may be used every day or just a few times a week. The duration of treatment will also vary, from just a few weeks to up to 16 weeks. In many cases, the cream is applied at bedtime, left on for about eight hours, and then washed off in the morning.
