Hydroxyzine Capsules

Hydroxyzine (Atarax®, Vistaril®) is a prescription antihistamine used to treat a variety of conditions. For example, the medicine is used to treat itching or improve the effectiveness of opioid medications. It comes in several strengths and forms. For example, hydroxyzine capsules are available in the following strengths:

  • Hydroxyzine pamoate 25 mg
  • Hydroxyzine pamoate 50 mg
  • Hydroxyzine pamoate 100 mg.

Other forms of hydroxyzine products are available, too, including tablets, syrup, oral suspension (liquid), and injections.

Although the dosage of hydroxyzine will vary based on several factors, the medication is typically taken two to four times a day. Before taking it, talk to your healthcare provider about any other medical conditions you have and any other medications you are taking (including vitamins, supplements, and nonprescription medications). Possible side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, and headaches.
