Health Benefits of Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is a product traditionally used to clean wounds, help remove earwax, and whiten teeth. It is also commonly used as a mouthwash. When used normally (in low concentrations for the uses listed previously), it is probably safe in most situations. However, using high-strength hydrogen peroxide does not offer any health benefits; in fact, using any strength inappropriately may be dangerous.
Some alternative healthcare providers say that taking hydrogen peroxide internally can produce other health benefits. For example, they claim it can cure conditions such as:
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Parkinson's disease
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Sore throat
However, according to Dr. Steven Galson of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), "No one has presented any evidence that hydrogen peroxide taken internally has any medical value."
Another thing to keep in mind when considering these questionable claims is that a person's success story could simply be a result of the "placebo effect." And in some cases, less-than-reputable companies will prey on a person's desire for better health, making up outrageous claims without testing a product's effectiveness.
