Potential Reactions to Hydrocortisone Butyrate

Common Side Effects

As is common with older medications, there is only vague side effect information available for hydrocortisone butyrate. In fact, the side effects listed in the prescribing information are not specific to hydrocortisone butyrate, but are side effects that are common with all topical steroids.
Common side effects of steroids, such as hydrocortisone butyrate, include (in order from most common to least common):
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Irritation
  • Drying
  • Inflammation or infection of skin follicles (folliculitis)
  • Increased sweating
  • Acne
  • Decreased skin pigmentation
  • Rash around the mouth
  • Allergic contact dermatitis (allergic skin reactions)
  • Soft, whitened skin (much like skin that is constantly wet)
  • Weakening and thinning of the skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Heat rash.
For all forms of hydrocortisone butyrate, side effects are more likely to occur when a dressing, such as a bandage, is used to cover the medication. Do not use a dressing or bandage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Long-Term Side Effects of Hydrocortisone Butyrate

Using steroids like hydrocortisone butyrate over long periods can cause a different set of side effects. These reactions are most likely to be seen in people who use this medicine over a large area of the body for a long time. Some of the problems seen with long-term use might include:
  • Weight gain
  • Bulging eyes
  • Fluid retention
  • Osteoporosis
  • Loss of muscle
  • Fat deposits on the face and back (causing a round face and a fatty hump on the back of the neck)
  • Diabetes
  • Cataracts
  • Stunted growth (in children).
Keep in mind that these effects are more common with systemic steroids, which are taken by mouth or injection, and are probably rare with hydrocortisone butyrate when used as directed and for a short time.
