Firazyr Side Effects

If you are using Firazyr and experience hives, difficulty breathing, or severe reactions at the injection site, contact your healthcare provider right away. Potentially serious problems can occur with this prescription drug, so it is important to know which reactions require urgent medical treatment. Other possible side effects of Firazyr include fever, dizziness, and skin reactions at the injection site.

An Introduction to Firazyr Side Effects

As with any medicine, Firazyr® (icatibant) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Firazyr. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects With Firazyr

Firazyr has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people treated with Firazyr were carefully documented and compared with the side effects that occurred in a similar group of people treated with a placebo (an injection with no active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.

In clinical studies, the most common side effects of Firazyr included:

  • Injection site skin reactions -- in up to 97 percent of people
  • Fever -- up to 4 percent
  • An increase in a certain liver enzyme called transaminase -- up to 4 percent
  • Dizziness -- up to 3 percent.

Injection site reactions included the following:

  • Bruising
  • Burning
  • Redness
  • Numbness
  • Irritation
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Pressure
  • Itching
