Is Elidel Safe for Children?

Adults who have mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis may benefit from Elidel® (pimecrolimus). But is it safe for children?

Yes -- children as young as two years old can use Elidel. However, it is unknown what types of long-term effects this medicine might have on a child's immune system. To help avoid any complications, talk to your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this medicine in children.

The dose of Elidel is the same for everyone, regardless of age -- a small amount applied on the affected areas of the skin twice daily. This drug is specifically approved for use only when other medications have failed or are not an option. It is also only approved for those who have an otherwise healthy immune system.
