Generic Substitute for Elidel Cream

Elidel® (pimecrolimus) is a prescription skin medicine licensed to treat mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis, commonly called eczema. It is approved for use in adults and children as young as two years old. There are currently no generic substitutes available for Elidel cream.

Elidel is protected by patents that prevent any generic version from being manufactured in the United States. This patent is set to expire in December 2016, which is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.

Although pimecrolimus is the active ingredient in Elidel, it is not a generic version of it. It can be confusing because pimecrolimus is known as the "generic name" for Elidel; however, it is not a generic version of it.
