Elidel Side Effects

Although Elidel is applied to the skin, side effects are possible with this medication. Common reactions may include upper respiratory tract infections, headaches, and skin reactions like burning or redness. In most cases, these effects are mild and easily treated. However, there are some potentially serious problems, such as infections, swollen glands, or difficulty breathing, which require medical treatment.

An Introduction to Elidel Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Elidel® (pimecrolimus) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Elidel. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Elidel

Elidel has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people using Elidel were carefully documented and compared to those that occurred in a group of people using a different medication or a placebo (a similar product that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the other groups.

In these studies, the most commonly reported Elidel side effects included:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections, such as the common cold -- in up to 26.5 percent of people
  • Burning or warmth at the application site -- up to 25.9 percent
  • Headaches -- up to 25.4 percent
  • Coughing -- up to 15.8 percent
  • Other skin reactions at the application site, such as irritation, redness, and itching -- up to 14.6 percent

  • Stomach flu -- up to 7.4 percent
  • Diarrhea -- up to 7.7 percent
  • Viral infections -- up to 6.6 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 6.6 percent.
