Diclofenac Gel Dosage

The standard dosage of diclofenac gel for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the upper extremity is 2 grams applied to the affected elbow, wrist, or hand four times a day. The standard dosage for an affected knee, ankle, or foot is 4 grams applied four times daily. The recommended dose for treating actinic keratosis is enough gel to cover the lesion applied twice daily.

Diclofenac Gel Dosage: An Introduction

The dosage of diclofenac gel (Solaraze® Gel, Voltaren® Gel) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The medical condition being treated
  • The area of the body being treated
  • Other medications you may be taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Diclofenac Gel Dosing for Arthritis

The standard recommended diclofenac gel dosage for osteoarthritis of the upper extremity is 2 grams applied to the affected elbow, wrist, or hand four times daily. For the lower extremity, the standard dosage is 4 grams applied to the affected knee, ankle, or foot four times daily.

The total dose (over all areas of the body) should not exceed 32 grams per day.

Only the diclofenac 1 percent gel (Voltaren Gel) is approved for this use.

Diclofenac Gel Dosing for Actinic Keratosis

The standard recommended diclofenac gel dose for actinic keratosis treatment is an adequate amount of the gel (enough to cover the lesion) applied twice daily. Larger lesions will require more gel, since the entire lesion must be covered. The gel should be smoothed on the skin gently.

Treatment usually lasts 60 to 90 days. Some people notice improvement right away, while others will not notice significant benefit until after the medication is stopped.

Only the diclofenac 3 percent gel (Solaraze) is approved for this use.
