What Is Desonide Cream Used For?
People who have psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, or certain other skin conditions may benefit from desonide cream. This medicine is a type of steroid and works by suppressing an overactive immune system and reducing inflammation. Although desonide cream is only approved for use in adults, other forms of desonide are approved for children.
Desonide cream (DesOwen®) is a prescription skin medication used to treat inflammation and itching due to a wide variety of conditions. Some of these conditions include but are not limited to:
Desonide is approved to treat any skin condition that is responsive to corticosteroids. This medicine comes in three forms, including a cream, an ointment, and a lotion. The ointment is greasier, while the lotion and cream are easier and less messy to apply.
Desonide cream is part of a group of medications known as glucocorticoids, which are a type of corticosteroid (or "steroid" for short). Although glucocorticoids have numerous effects in the body, they are used mostly for their anti-inflammatory or immune-suppressing properties. Desonide cream works for most conditions by decreasing inflammation or suppressing an overactive immune system.
Desonide cream is not approved for use in children. However, other forms of desonide (specifically, desonide gel or desonide foam) are approved for treating atopic dermatitis in children as young as three months old.
Children may be more likely to absorb more of the drug through the skin into the rest of the body, increasing the risk for side effects. Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using desonide cream.
In general, if desonide cream or any other topical steroid is to be applied to the diaper area, diapers or "plastic pants" should not be used, as they may increase the absorption of the drug.
