Generic Desonate

At this time, Desonate (desonide gel) is available in brand-name form only. The drug is currently protected by exclusivity rights that expire in August 2020. When these exclusivity rights expire, other companies may begin manufacturing a generic version of Desonate. However, certain factors may change this date, so it's hard to say when a generic version will be introduced.

Can I Buy Generic Desonate?

Desonate® (desonide gel) is a prescription skin medication used to treat atopic dermatitis. It is a topical steroid that is applied to the skin twice a day. This medicine comes in the form of a gel.

Desonate is made by Contract Pharmaceuticals Limited for Intendis. The drug is protected against generic competition by exclusivity rights, and no generic versions are available in the United States.

When Will Generic Desonate Be Available?

The exclusivity rights for Desonate are currently set to expire in August 2020. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version of Desonate could become available. However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten the exclusivity period. This could include such things as other patents for specific Desonate uses or lawsuits.

Is Desonide a Generic Version of Desonate? What About DesOwen or Verdeso?

Desonide is the active ingredient in Desonate (as well as in DesOwen®, Verdeso®, and generic versions of DesOwen), but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of any drug is often referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.

DesOwen comes in a cream, ointment, or lotion. Verdeso comes in a foam. Neither drug is considered equivalent to Desonate, which is a gel.
