Is Generic Dexamethasone as Good as Decadron?

Is Generic Dexamethasone as Good as Decadron?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns each generic a rating. An "AB" rating ("AA," "AP," or "AT" in the case of liquids, injections, or topical medications) means the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication.

Some, but not all, of the generic dexamethasone products currently available have an "AB" (or equivalent) rating.

It should be noted, however, that not all generic dexamethasone medications are actually generic versions of Decadron. This does not mean they are not as good as Decadron, it just means they were not compared directly to Decadron. Instead, many of these medications were compared to other versions of dexamethasone.

Also, keep in mind that generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
