When using Decadron, the dosage will depend on the particular product you are using, your age, the type and severity of the condition being treated, and various other factors. Regardless of the form of Decadron you are using, do not suddenly stop taking this medication. If you have been using this medicine for a long period of time, your dosing amount will be gradually reduced.
An Introduction to Your Dosage of DecadronThe dose of Decadron® (dexamethasone) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- The particular Decadron product
- Your age
- Your weight (in children)
- The type and severity of the condition being treated
- How you respond to the medication
- Other medications you are taking
- Other medical conditions you may have.
Decadron Dosing GuidelinesThe recommended dosage of Decadron varies from person to person. The initial dose in adults is generally 0.75 mg to 9 mg a day. However, lower or higher doses may be used in some cases. For example, for sudden worsening of multiple sclerosis, daily doses can be as high as 30 mg a day. There is no well-established maximum Decadron dose.
The initial Decadron dosage in children is typically 0.02 mg to 0.3 mg per kg of weight per day, divided into three or four doses. Your healthcare provider will calculate the amount for you.
In general, most people take Decadron for a short period of time to avoid long-term side effects. If long-term treatment is necessary, your healthcare provider will find the lowest effective amount to treat your condition. This will be your maintenance dosage.
Your maintenance amount may need to be adjusted periodically, based on your disease status and your individual response. Most people need higher doses in times of stress, such as during injury, infection, or emotional distress.
If Decadron has been used for more than a few days, it should not be stopped suddenly. Instead, your healthcare provider will recommend a gradual dosage reduction to stop the medication.
The initial dosage for Decadron eye drops is usually one or two drops in the affected eye(s) four to six times a day for mild eye conditions, and one to two drops every hour for severe conditions. This amount will then be decreased gradually, and eventually stopped, as the condition improves. In most cases, treatment should not last more than a few weeks.
The initial dosage for Decadron ear drops is normally three or four drops in the affected ear(s) two to three times a day. The dosage will then be decreased gradually, and eventually stopped, as the condition improves. In most cases, treatment should not last more than a few weeks.
