Helpful Tips for Clindamycin/Benzoyl Peroxide

General Information on Using Clindamycin/Benzoyl Peroxide

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide include the following:

  • This medication comes in the form of a gel. The normal dose is a pea-sized amount applied to the affected area(s) once or twice a day. The actual instructions may vary depending on the clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide product used, so refer to the instructions for your particular medicine.
  •
  • Before applying the gel, gently wash the affected area with a mild cleanser, rinse with warm water, and pat dry. Allow your skin to dry completely before using this medicine.
  •
  • This medicine will work best to treat and prevent further acne if it is applied to the entire affected area(s) as directed. Do not just treat individual pimples or use it only when breakouts occur.
  •
  • Do not get clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide in your eyes, nose, mouth, or other body openings, as it can irritate these areas. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the gel to help prevent this from happening.
  •
  • Using astringents, alcohol-containing toners, or other acne products while using this medicine could cause severe skin irritation. Do not use other acne products unless your healthcare provider tells you otherwise.
  •
  • Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun when you use clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide. Therefore, minimize your time in the sun, and avoid artificial sun (tanning beds, sun lamps, etc.) while using it. Apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing, such as a hat, when you go outside. Your healthcare provider can help you choose an appropriate sunscreen.
  •
  • In general, you should not apply clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide to skin that is cut, sunburned, has open wounds, or is otherwise irritated.
  •
  • Allow the medicine to dry completely before touching colored fabric, such as clothing, bed sheets, or pillowcases, as this medicine may bleach hair and colored fabric.
  •
  • For clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide to work properly, it must be used as prescribed. Applying more gel, or applying it more often, will not make it work better or faster. Instead, it may irritate your skin.
  •
  • If you are unsure about anything related to dosing with clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide, please talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist.
