Generic Cinryze

No generic Cinryze products are available at this time. This is because Cinryze is a type of biologic medicine, which means it is made using live cells or organisms. Although laws and regulations currently prevent companies from making generic versions of biologics, these laws are beginning to change. Once this happens, companies may be able to manufacture generic Cinryze.

Can I Buy Generic Cinryze?

Cinryze® (C1 esterase inhibitor) is a prescription medicine approved for the treatment of hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare but serious genetic condition that causes sudden attacks of swelling in various areas of the body. This drug is used on a regular basis to prevent these sudden attacks from occurring.

Cinryze is made by Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation for ViroPharma Biologics, Inc. It is considered a "biologic" product and is, therefore, under different rules and regulations than most other prescription medications. At this time, Cinryze is not available in generic form.

What Is a Biologic?

Biologics are medical products made using living cells or organisms. Biologics can be medicines, vaccines, or blood products. Cinryze is a biologic because it is a human protein made from blood.

Because biologics are complex products made from living cells instead of chemically created like most other prescription medicines, it can be difficult for a generic manufacturer to make an identical version of a biologic product already on the market. Therefore, in the past, regulations did not allow generic biologics to be made, and brand-name manufacturers were largely protected from generic competition.

However, generic manufacturers may be able to make products that are similar enough to brand-name biologics to have the same effects in the body and, therefore, be safely substituted for them. These products are sometimes called "biosimilars" or "follow-on biologics." Regulations are currently changing to pave the way for the availability of biosimilars as generic versions of already marketed biologic medicines.
