Calcipotriene

Plaque psoriasis can often be treated with calcipotriene -- a prescription drug that comes in cream, foam, solution (liquid), and ointment forms. The medication is applied to the affected area twice daily, and you should wash your hands after applying it (unless this is the area being treated). Most people have no problems with it, but side effects can include burning, tingling, and stinging sensations.

What Is Calcipotriene?

Calcipotriene (Dovonex®, Sorilux®) is a prescription medication approved for treating plaque psoriasis. It comes in the form of a cream, ointment, solution (liquid), and foam. The liquid form is usually used on the scalp.

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, calcipotriene may cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well.
 
If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can be treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious reactions are less common.
 
The most common side effects seen with calcipotriene include:
 
  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Stinging
  • Tingling
  • Skin irritation.
