An Introduction to Side Effects of Benzyl Alcohol Lotion
Just like any medicine,
benzyl alcohol lotion (
Ulesfia®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. Some people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Benzyl Alcohol Lotion Side Effects to Report
Some benzyl alcohol lotion side effects are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
- Significant skin or eye irritation
- Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
- An unexplained rash
- Hives
- Itching
- Unexplained swelling of the mouth or throat
- Wheezing or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Benzyl alcohol lotion has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people was treated with benzyl alcohol lotion, and another group was treated with a lotion that did not contain the active ingredient (but had the same inactive ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared between the two groups.
In these studies, the most common side effects of benzyl alcohol lotion included but were not limited to:
- Skin irritation at the application site -- in up to 2 percent of people
- Numbness or decreased sensation at the application site -- up to 2 percent
- Pain at the application site -- up to 1 percent.
