What Is Azficel-T Used For?

If smile lines are a concern for you, your healthcare provider may recommend a product called azficel-T. This personalized cell therapy uses your own cells, which are multiplied in a laboratory and then injected directly into the smile lines. The effects are expected to last at least six months. Azficel-T is only approved for use by healthcare providers who have gone through special training.

An Overview of Uses for Azficel-T

Azficel-T (LaViv™) is a personalized cell therapy product used for cosmetic purposes. The medication is approved to treat "nasolabial folds."

One of the main causes of facial folds and wrinkles is the natural loss of collagen that occurs as people age. Collagen provides structure to the skin, helps to promote skin elasticity, and helps the skin to retain moisture, improving the appearance of smile lines. Azficel-T is specifically created for each user, using skin cells obtained through a biopsy.

Azficel-T is not for people who desire instant results, as it can take as long as six months for the product to be created. After that, it takes three treatment sessions -- each three to six weeks apart -- to finish the treatment. Even then, improvement can be gradual.

Not all healthcare providers are qualified to use this product; only those who have completed a training program can do so. Also, keep in mind that sometimes the laboratory cannot make enough of the product, and another biopsy may need to be performed.

Studies have shown the effects of azficel-T to last at least six months. It is unclear, at this point, how much longer they last. It is possible that additional treatments will be needed to maintain the desired effects.

How Does Azficel-T Work?

It is not entirely clear how azficel-T works. Since it contains mostly fibroblasts, at least theoretically, it makes sense that azficel-T works by increasing collagen production since fibroblasts are responsible for making collagen.
