Side Effects of Azelaic Acid Gel

While most people do not experience problems while using azelaic acid gel, side effects can still occur. Common ones include skin reactions, such as dryness, redness, and a burning or stinging sensation. In most cases, side effects are minor and easily treated. However, contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop serious problems while using the drug, such as hives or difficulty breathing.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Azelaic Acid Gel

As with any medicine, azelaic acid gel (Finacea®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Azelaic Acid Gel Side Effects to Report

Some side effects are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Severe, intolerable skin reactions
  • Skin reactions (such as redness and peeling) that do not improve within two or three weeks
  • Patchy lightening of the skin
  • Excessive hair growth
  • Worsening of asthma
  • Worsening of cold sores
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
 
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
