Generic Avage

Although the patent for Avage (tazarotene) has expired, no generic versions of the drug are currently available. It is unknown when -- or even if -- a generic version will be introduced. Because you cannot be sure of what you're getting, do not buy anything claiming to be "generic Avage" until an FDA-approved generic is available.

Can I Buy Generic Avage?

Avage® (tazarotene) is a prescription skin cream used to treat signs of overexposure to the sun, such as fine wrinkling and skin discoloration. It belongs to a class of medications known as retinoids.

Brand-name Avage is made by Allergan, Inc. At this time, Avage is not available in generic form. Yet, if you search the Internet for "generic Avage," you may find a number of companies selling it. The fact is that these medicines may be fake, substandard, and potentially dangerous.

Generic Avage may be available from another country, but there is really no way of knowing if you are getting genuine Avage or not. You should not buy any generic Avage until an approved version is available.

When Will Generic Avage Be Available?

The patent for Avage expired in June 2011. Yet, no generic versions are available, for unclear reasons. It is also unclear when a generic could become available, since there are no obvious reasons why there are no generic versions yet.

Is Tazarotene a Generic Avage?

No -- tazarotene is the active ingredient in Avage (as well as in Tazorac®, another prescription skin product), but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that oftentimes, the active ingredient of any drug is referred to as the "generic name."

The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
