Avage Dosage

Before applying Avage, remove any cosmetics, and -- if you wash your face -- make sure your face is dry. The standard dose of Avage cream is a pea-sized amount applied to the entire face once daily (in the evening). As you start treatment, you can expect some skin irritation. If the irritation becomes extreme, your healthcare provider may modify your dosage.

An Introduction to Dosing With Avage

There is only one standard dosage for Avage® (tazarotene), regardless of your age or weight. As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Avage Dosage for Fine Wrinkles or Skin Discoloration

Avage is applied to the entire face once daily in the evening. A pea-sized amount should cover the entire face. Although some skin irritation, redness, and burning are to be expected, your healthcare provider may recommend that you use Avage less frequently (such as every other day) if extreme irritation occurs.
Because this medication will make you more sensitive to the sun, you should use a facial sunscreen or moisturizer with an SPF of 15 or higher every morning. Your healthcare provider can recommend a sunscreen that is ideal for you.
In addition, Avage can cause birth defects, so women of childbearing potential should have a negative pregnancy test before using it and should start the drug during a normal menstrual period. Adequate birth control must be used throughout treatment (see Avage and Pregnancy for more information).

General Information on Your Avage Dose

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Avage include the following:
  • Avage is usually applied once daily to the entire face in the evening (including the eyelids, if desired). Use a pea-sized amount.
  • Remove any cosmetics before applying Avage. If you wash your face, be sure the skin is completely dry before using this medication.
  • You may use moisturizers before or after applying Avage. Make sure the first product applied (either Avage or a moisturizer) has absorbed into the skin and is dry before applying the second product.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure, since you will burn more easily. A facial sunscreen or moisturizer with at least SPF 15 should be used every day.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or Avage dosing in general, please talk with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
